Ruby in Zoisite

Ruby is thus named because of its red color (Latin Rubeus). It was not until about 1800 that ruby, as well as sapphire, was recognized as belonging to the corundum group. Before that date red spinel and garnet were also designated as ruby. 

The mineral zoisite (named after the collector Zois) was the first found in the Sau-Alp mountains of Austria in 1805. It was originally called saualpite, and has only recently been considered a gemstone.
